I don't intend to infringe anyone's copyright, I just want to share the excitement I had many years ago discovering this music.
If any artist objects to a post please inform me and I'll remove it straight away.Neilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431808802184015744noreply@blogger.comBlogger284125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2678237795765421820.post-33441481770429051232014-09-17T18:22:00.000+01:002014-09-17T18:24:42.953+01:00HVY DRT - Live !!!

This is rarer than rocking horse shit....HVY DRT,...live...wow!

There were a number of reasons I started this blog and one of the main ones was the fact that HVY DRT hadn't appeared anywhere. To me they were a band who deserved to be much better known and appreciated. When I got there 12'', a million years ago, I was knocked out. They epitomised the SoCal sound that I'd hooked into from the rodney on the roq compilations of the early '80's.

So, it was with great suprise and excitement when I was contacted out of the blue by someone who knew the band and said they had a copy of a live tape. They'd managed to give it to someone in a studio who cleaned it up and this is the end result. I've had this for a few months, but as things are mental I've not had the time to post...poor excuse I guess.

I have no idea when this gig was, it wasn't the above date as I found that on a sharepoint site. I'll contact the very kind person who sent me this and update this post later on with facts. All the song titles are 100% correct, so apologies for not knowing the date, but I wanted to get this out there as it deserves to be heard...and appreciated :)

These guys are sooooo tight it's unreal. The songs off the ep are played with such skill they are hard to tell from the studio versions, clearly they're live, but they are tight as hell and played at the same tempo....almost note perfect across this whole show. Really impressive.

This is a real piece of history...a huge thanks to the fellow music obsessive who gave me this copy and the band for just being fucking great.
How on earth can you ever successfully describe to a new music fan what it was like to walk past a stranger and see a badge, t-shirt, logo and share a knowing smile and wink?

How can you describe the feeling of discovering a new band in a sea of shit? The letter writing, the trading, the scores, the rip offs, the arseholes, the mad people, the ones you still talk to today, 30 years later? I've tried and they just don't get it.

Anyway, this is a documentary about the British hardcore scene shown VERY late at night, well early hours of the morning to be exact, and is really worth spending 22 minutes 30 seconds to watch.

Or you can try dazed

I have no idea if this if you're allowed to view this outside the UK; if you can't let me know and I'll try and rip it. Enjoy.Neilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09431808802184015744noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2678237795765421820.post-11832964633200981952014-03-26T07:07:00.001+00:002014-03-26T07:08:30.659+00:00Best album of 2013.....

I don't want to leave sad news as the top title so I thought I'd post my favourite album of 2013.

Snuff have always been a firm fave of mine and I still can't work out why they aren't huge; they are such an underrated band. This album was their return to recording after a ten year break in between albums. This album has no filler tunes, although some would disagree, for me this is in their top three albums released.

Really sad news, again, and another one who's so young.

I found out about this one via Boyd from Black Market Baby and to say it was a shock would be an understatement. I have the first three Gwar albums and have followed them pretty closely ever since; missing the odd album here and there. Each of their albums are so easy on the ears, for me, and I loved the way that the humour came across, a blessing and a curse to them I'd guess. I think he wrote some great sing-a-long songs and I love his voice.

I saw them a few times in the early days and will never forget the second time with just a few hundred people. The next day you felt like you were in a special club as you could spot people who'd been to the gig as we all had redheads where the fake blood had sweated into skin pores. The world needs bands like Gwar; funny, irreverent with kicking tunes....it's will be less fun without him around.

On the evidence of this performance the answer is very, very, very low. I'd have repeatedly punched myself in the face had I paid to see this crap. Without a doubt this is worse then seeing Black Flag in their turgid, indulgent days.

For the love of god Greg stop playing under the BF name.
They say "good things are worth waiting for..." and, for the most part, I agree, but 20 years! Is it worth waiting that long? The simple answer in this instance is "yes!!".

This 4 track ep is like they've never been away, admittedly it leans heavily on the poppier/catchier side of the Zero Boys, but that's not a bad thing at all. .... .4 tracks; all killer, no filler. Each of them displaying that classic ZB swagger. I can only hope this isn't a blip and they now intend to feed us with a stream of releases...if not, oh well; this is great stuff anyway.

You can buy it for pennies here or you can just have a listen and decide for yourself.

DO NOT be put off by the silly name...this is a classic punk album.

Formed in May 1977 in Brighton Joe Cool & the Killers released 1 7'' and this album and both are fucking great; the 7'' went for a small fortune a few years back, probably rightly so tbh. If you like the old UK 77 punk, or high energy punk, then is a must for you. It's truely great.

They were picked up by the same guy who spotted, and took to fame, Leo Sayer. That fact alone would be enough to put anyone off, and once you throw in the name most people would put their trainers on and start running for the hills. What a mistake that would be.

They lasted until late '78 and split up. I have no idea what happened to any of the band with the exception of Tony Mayberry who joined The Depressions.
Now here's a band that I wish had continued to produce more as this is such a great 7''.

I have no clue as to how they formed, but I'm thankful they did and left this gem behind in their wake. A band who comprised the following personnel: -

John (Stabb) Schroeder - Vocals
Rob Frankel - Guitar
Steve Hansgen - Bass
Danny Ingram - Drums

This long out of print 7'' was released on Tragic Life records in 1993.

The sound isn't too dissimilar to latter day Government Issue, so you know it has to be good. I've rambled on about the members of this band at various times before and they should be pretty well known to most fans of hardcore. A, possibly, little known fact is that Steve Hansgen joined Boyd Farrell and Mike Dolfi. both ex Black Market Baby, in Rustbuckit a while ago.... a band who's record is soooooooooo song overdue that I've almost worn out my demo copy!!!!

I have a live set of Emmapeel somewhere....I'll upload it one day.

What a lovely way to start a miserable wet and rainy Saturday morning. I check my various e-mail accounts and in the one for this blog I find a link to a band called Dot Dash who grab my attention with the header of "dc band". I click a link and I'm immediately hit by the power of the drumming, the opening track is instantly impressive and hooks me straight in.

Reading further through the e-mail Dot Dash have a real heritage and consist of: -

Terry Banks - Vocals/Guitar (Glo-Worm, The Saturday People, Tree Fort Angst, Julie Ocean)
Bill Crandall - Guitar (Modest Proposal, Adam West)
Hunter Bennett - Bass (Weatherhead, Julie Ocean)
Danny Ingram - Drums (Youth Brigade (dc), Social Suicide, Madhouse, Emmapeel, Strange Boutique, Swervedriver and a few more that I can't think of)

So Danny explains the powerful drumming and with Terry, Hunter and Bill it explains the hook laden songs.

Dot Dash are a very accomplished powerpop/punk pop band, and this album speeds past you at a million miles an hour, not due to it's velocity, but due to the seamless sequence of flawless songs that take you on the musical equivalent of the perfect speed date.

The album starts with Faraway, full of atmosphere, Byrds like guitars and Buzzcocks trade mark "ooohs and ahhhs" and slips into track two, Countdown, equally hook laden and captivating. Before you realise it they've spun your head though a plethora of perfect pop songs and the album is finishing with The Devil's Road. All the intervening songs flow effortlessly into each other and are beautifully constructed with a clear/sharp production. This is a refreshingly uplifting album that I know will sit with me for years to come.

Thanks to the Bandcamp website you can hear the album here. You can also buy the album, for as little as, $7, which is a pittence for such a stunning piece of work.

Their Facebook page can be found here
