Rain like the Sound of Trains (1993)

Sheesh...where to start.

This band epitomise the incestuous DC nature better than most. Started in the early 90's by: -

Bobby Sullivan - vocals
Pete Chramiec - Guitar
Doug Birdzell (aka Dug E. Bird)- Bass
Joshua LaRue (aka Josh Payne)- Drums

Between them they were in the following bands: -

Underground Soldier, Beefeater, Fidelity Jones, Sevens, Him, Verbal Assault, Lunchmeat, Soulside, Seven League Boots, Spontaneous Earth, The Sorts, Suture, Las Mordidas, All Scars, Jack O'Fire, The Boom and quite a few more besides.

Developing a quirky, rhythmic, funky sound they showed just how far the "post hardcore" sound could be taken. They gigged extensively, opened minds and entertained, but sadly lasted all too briefly and were defunct by '95.

Here you have their first two 7'' What I Want and Bad Man's Grave. They also released a great album and ep...which I'll upload some time.

  1. a funny story for you, RLTST played in Ft Worth, Texas during 1993. They ended up opening for then largely unknown SoCal punk band the Offspring. About 100 people watched RLTST and then 90 left after they were done. When the Offspring took the stage they appeared quite let-down that no one really cared to see them. It always amuses me when the opening bands get better turnouts than the headliners. I remember the same thing happening to Screeching Weasel during 1991.

  3. I saw the same thing happen at an illegal space called the Cooler in Providence, RI...RLTSOT opened for Into Another, and the more-metal leaning members of the band took one look at RLTSOT and were kind of laughing and elbowing each other like "who are THESE bohemian clowns?!?". RLTSOT turned in one of the most kinetic crazy sets I've seen, Dug was almost bouncing off the ceiling..and Into Another actually looked kind of scared to take the stage after them. I also don't think they counnted on the "hometown" support for Pete, being ex-Verbal Assault and it being Rhode Island. Thaks so much for posting this!! (I still have the demo tape IN my car as I type, because that version of "Mind My Mind" is one of the great lost DC/emo cuts).
